Norwegian renewable generation company Statkraft is to build its first windfarms in Chile.

The 102 MW Torsa project comprises three windfarms totaling 19 turbines supplied by German manufacturer Nordex.

In total, the windfarms are expected to produce more than 300 GWh of energy annually, which Statkraft says is enough to power 100,000 households.

The project is located in the O’Higgins region, 124 kilometres south of Santiago, and when combined with the company’s existing hydropower assets, will give Statkraft a generating capacity of 366 MW by the end of 2023.

“These three wind farms are not only expanding our generating capacity in Chile… they are broadening our renewable energy portfolio by including wind power for the first time,” said Statkraft’s international executive vice-president Jürgen Tzschoppe, who added “we’re planning to include solar into our generation mix”.

He said Chile was “an attractive market for Statkraft and we want to capitalize on our combined expertise in power generation and market operations to best serve the market and provide energy to large industrial customers in the country”.

Construction will start later this year with the first turbines expected to start operating in October 2022.
