Celebrating a Nation of Makers

Try to remember the most memorable moment from science class and you’ll probably think of the time your teacher had you build a rocket or make ice cream in a plastic bag. It’s these types of hands on “making” experiences that inspire creativity in students and spark interest in STEM careers.

Today, the National Week of Making (June 17-23) launches at the White House. The week celebrates and promotes the Maker Movement in the United States. At AT&T Aspire, we’re excited to be a part of the movement and, in fact, two organizations that we are collaborating with are being highlighted for broadening participation in making, tinkering and inventing among young people.

  • Bitsbox will launch a home-based making and coding education pilot. Their goals is to double the overall number of young people making apps on the Bitsbox website to more than 1.2 million and are working explicitly to reach thousands of youth in under-represented communities.
  • Maker Media, with support from AT&T and several other companies, is committing to engage over 1 million kids nationally over the next 12 months in hands-on project based learning through online Maker Camps, Maker Faires and School Maker Faires.
