Gary Spoales Joins American Public University System as Director of Financial Service Operations

Gary Spoales, an experienced higher education and student financial aid executive, has been selected as Director of Financial Service Operations for American Public University System (APUS). APUS is an accredited, affordable, online university system that serves more than 33,000 adult learners studying in 50 states and more than 100 countries. Spoales will play an integral role in leading the expansion, innovation, and continual improvement of student financial aid operations at APUS.

Gary brings more than 30 years of student financial aid knowledge to our expanding financial services operations, said Harry T. Wilkins, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for APUS. His industry leadership and successful track record will be a tremendous asset to APUS as our student population continues its rapid growth.

Spoales has lead several successful student financial aid operations at a number of institutions of higher learning. He intends to use his expertise at APUS to create more efficient access to student financial aid, thus opening the marketplace for more students to pursue higher education.

We believe his expertise will help more students take advantage of our affordable degree programs, added Mr. Wilkins.

Prior to joining APUS, Spoales served as Vice President of Education Consulting Services, a company that provides education financial planning and consulting to families and schools. He held several management positions with Bank of America Student Banking Group and served as a Director of Financial Aid Services for University of Maryland University College (UMUC). His experience also includes financial aid management and leadership at George Mason University, Beacon College, Capitol Institute of Technology, St. Johns College, and Bay College.

Spoales holds a masters degree in Education with a concentration in higher education administration from George Washington University and a bachelors degree in Business Administration from Clarion State College.
