Suffolk, one of the most innovative and successful privately-owned builders and real estate enterprises in the country, is announcing they have received a 2020 Ruby Award for Project of the Year in the Best New Construction category. Suffolk is being honored alongside affordable housing developer, Affirmed Housing, for Stella and Bluewater, two new supportive housing communities located in the Grantville neighborhood of San Diego.
San Diego Housing Federation’s Ruby Awards recognize excellence in affordable housing and community development in San Diego. The construction of Stella and Bluewater was led by Suffolk to help address a state-wide affordable housing shortage by providing housing for 160 of San Diego’s most vulnerable individuals, families and veterans.
“Suffolk is honored to be recognized by the San Diego Housing Federation in partnership with Affirmed Housing for our most recent affordable housing project,” said Zach Hammond, General Manager, Suffolk San Diego. “We hope to continue to partner with developers like Affirmed Housing to give back to this city and strive to continue to provide quality projects that meaningfully serve the communities in which we live and work.”
Stella features a mix of 80 permanent supportive housing units for formerly homeless individuals and those with special needs. Stella offers on-site services to residents through its partners, Interfaith Community Services and the VA. Bluewater consists of 80 units for low-income households earning between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income. The units were assigned months in advance to people in need of supportive housing, and the developments were completed in August 2019.
“It is an honor to win this year’s Project of the Year Ruby Award for New Construction,” said James Silverwood, President of Affirmed Housing. “Our goal has always been to create communities that provide safe, high-quality multifamily housing. We are proud to deliver Stella and Bluewater to a neighborhood in need of supportive and affordable housing for its residents and are eager to continue serving the San Diego community.”
