Whether seen first-hand from the streets of Minneapolis or Oakland, or on our Instagram feeds, the reality we face is one in the same. We are witnessing the dawn of a new era. An era borne out of our nation’s crisis of consciousness and disunity in the aftermath of the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd, and the failure of the authorities to promptly seek justice for these crimes. An era dedicated to dismantling the system of white supremacy. An era committed to the payment of reparations and the restoration of cultural bonds broken by governmental policies implemented to oppress, subordinate, and control Blacks, Hispanics/Latinx, Native Americans and other indigenous peoples of the Americas, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Islands over the past 400 years.
We began writing “SUPREME MINDFLOW” after the release of a video showing the pursuit and fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery by a group of white men. Like many of you, the footage shocked our senses, broke our hearts, and filled us with an unquenchable rage and hunger for immediate, retributive justice. But sometimes that level of anger can blind us from seeing the optimal approach to obtaining a just outcome. SUPREME MINDFLOW represents a mind state of focused, dispassionate thought that we try to go to when our emotional response mechanisms threaten to cloud our elevated selves, as it did when we saw this footage. But before we could finish recording the song, George Floyd was murdered, and our anger was on the verge of … a criminal sentencing point of no return. Through hours of conversation and meditation, we were able to stay in tune with our elevated selves, and stay focused on the fight at hand. As we say in the song, “NOW we need justice for Ahmaud Arbery.” NOW.
