Diageo Backs Initiative to Combat Underage Drinking and Drunk Driving in St. Louis, MO

ST. LOUIS, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Diageo, the world's leading spirits, wine and beer company is proud to support Brandon Silveria in his efforts to combat drunk driving and underage drinking as he speaks to students in St. Louis this week. Silveria, who survived a drunk driving crash when he was a teen, speaks to students today at the Whitfield School in St. Louis to share his experience.

In Missouri, according to the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health, binge alcohol use in the past month for 12-17 year olds was 12.84% for the period 2004-2005. This compared to a national average of 10.49%. Also, past month use, for this same time period and age group, was 19.96% compared to the national average of 17.06%.

Brandon travels around the country telling his story under the auspices of The Century Council, a nonprofit organization funded by some of the nation's leading distillers. When Silveria was 17, he endured a three-week coma due to a drunk driving crash. Since his rehabilitation, Silveria has devoted himself to speaking about his experience and encouraging people under the legal drinking age to make the right decisions about alcohol. Although his speech has been permanently impaired, Silveria's presentation delivers a resounding message on the dangers of underage drinking and drunk driving and has captivated audiences across the country.

"We stand alongside Brandon today as he helps teach students about the serious ramifications of underage drinking and drunk driving," said Gerard Dehrmann, Senior Director of State Government Relations, Diageo North America. "We hope Brandon's powerful message resonates with young people and helps save lives."

Diageo is a founding member and major supporter of The Century Council, an organization funded by some of the country's leading distillers committed to developing programs to combat drunk driving and underage drinking. These programs include "Ask, Listen, Learn," "Cops in Shops," and "Brandon Tells his Story." The Century Council also works with a broad array of education and prevention professionals on alcohol issues.
