[Calhoun, Ga.] The conversation around sustainability is rapidly changing and Mohawk’s vice president of sustainability George Bandy is ready to lend his voice to its future.
“The industry as a whole has evolved. In the early ’90s it was about measuring water, greenhouse gases and installing solar panels,” he said. “The evolution is how these things impact productivity — that was the first iteration around productivity, how people perform. It’s evolved to, we want productivity, but we want people to live healthier lives. That becomes the culture of the organization.”
Bandy, in fact, is FCW’s first GreenStep People Award winner which recognizes efforts around the health and wellness of company associates and the surrounding community.
“We are doing really unique things but also looking around a healthy life, biometrics, inviting local farmers’ markets to come to our locations,” he said. “It’s also about having people do things outside of the community, outside the building.” The company has long been a partner with Susan G. Komen and Habitat for Humanity, for example. “We are doing different things in different ways to add value as an organization and be a corporate global citizen,” he added.
