BUSHMILLS, Northern Ireland, Aug. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- In celebration of the 400th anniversary of its license to distill, the town of Bushmills - the home of Bushmills Irish Whiskey -- is conducting a nationwide search for the "Twin City of Bushmills in America." Bushmills, a small town with big spirit, is looking for that one place in the United States, be it a large city or small town that mirrors its exceptional spirit, culture and pride.
The city or town that is proclaimed the "Twin City of Bushmills" will celebrate with a toast from the Master Distiller of Bushmills Irish Whiskey, and will receive a $20,000 grant for the preservation/advancement of the city's time-honored traditions and culture. Each of the first 10 cities that submits a complete application will also be awarded $1,000 for the preservation/advancement of its local traditions and culture. Visit Bushmills.com for information on how cities and other eligible organizations can apply.
The connection between Bushmills and America runs deep. Just eight years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Bushmills Distillery was exporting nearly 10,000 gallons of Irish whiskey to America each year. For the next two centuries, people from the region immigrated to the United States in large numbers, bringing with them not only a love of whiskey, but also a distinct and storied culture that still lives proud and true. Now the town of Bushmills and the folks at the distillery want to recognize one American city that continues to exude this spirit.
"We're excited to unite Bushmills in a Twin City relationship with one American city that truly possesses the humor, wit and spirit that make our home and our whiskey so special," said Gordon Donoghue, Master Distiller of Bushmills Irish Whiskey. "We invite our fans to toast the spirit of Bushmills by enjoying a glass of whiskey responsibly."
How do residents know if their city has what it takes to be the Twin City of Bushmills? There are four quintessential values that make Bushmills -- both the town and the whiskey -- unique:
-- Pride of place: In 2008, the town of Bushmills will celebrate the 400th anniversary of its license to distill whiskey. This milestone is a tribute to the citizens of Bushmills, whose enduring spirit and strong sense of community have kept alive a unique distilling tradition for centuries. -- Hospitality: Locals love to enjoy a whiskey while swapping stories in the home of a good friend. -- Craftsmanship: Bushmills is renowned for the craftsmanship that goes into Bushmills Irish Whiskey as well as the arts and handiworks native to the area. -- Humor and wit: In Bushmills, there are 1,000 jokes about the overabundance of rain, and Bushmills Irish Whiskey found a fantastic way to use it.
The finalist cities -- as chosen by the Master Distiller and other esteemed citizens of Bushmills -- will be profiled online beginning in January 2008. Through St. Patrick's Day, people across America will be able to vote for the city that best exemplifies the spirit of Bushmills. The city with the most votes will be proclaimed the "Twin City of Bushmills in America" in time for the Bushmills 400th anniversary celebration on April 20, 2008.
