Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq: ADBE) and Chunghwa® Telecom (TAIEX 2412, NYSE: CHT) today announced a partnership to deliver Adobe® FlashCast® technology to more than eight million subscribers in Taiwan. The new offering is expected to deliver rich data services across the Chunghwa Telecom network before the end of 2007.
Adobe FlashCast is designed to deliver rich, customized data services through a new generation of Adobe Flash® Player compatible mobile applications called channels. Chunghwa Telecom subscribers will be able to access multiple channels delivering news, entertainment, weather information, and more. A set of premium channels with content from leading media brands will offer information for specific groups and demographics. Interoperability with browsers, messaging applications, and media players allow Chunghwa Telecom to leverage investments in existing data services.
“With mobile handset penetration in Taiwan greater than 100 percent, it is critical to bring mobile data services to a new and unprecedented level,” said Chang-Rong Chen, vice president, Mobile Business Group at Chunghwa Telecom. “By delivering more engaging mobile experiences through Adobe FlashCast, Chunghwa Telecom is able to differentiate its brand in the mobile marketplace, increase customer loyalty and build an ecosystem of partners to generate new revenue streams.”
For leading operators like Chunghwa Telecom, the remarkable success of NTT DoCoMo’s FlashCast application is a great example. Since the i-channel™ news and daily information delivery service launched in Japan in 2005, more than 10 million mobile phone subscribers have signed up for the service (see separate press release). Subscribers receive five base channels for content—including news, weather, entertainment reports, sports and horoscopes—and are alerted to new channel updates via the standby screens of their mobile phone.
“FlashCast services are being implemented by leading operators in all major regions of the world,” said Gary Kovacs, vice president for product management and marketing, Mobile and Devices at Adobe. “We are excited to work with Chunghwa Telecom to deliver a new generation of more rich and engaging data services to their customers.”
Flash Player compatible technology enables operators, OEMs, consumer handset manufacturers and content providers to offer customizable user interfaces, while delivering more consistent consumer experiences across devices, operating systems, processors and screen sizes. By leveraging the Flash ecosystem — which includes the Flash authoring tool, Adobe Flash Lite™ player runtime and an established community of more than one million designers and developers — Adobe’s Flash technology can reduce deployment costs and deliver content and interfaces three to five times faster than competing solutions. Today more than 200 million Flash enabled mobile devices have shipped worldwide.
