NORWALK, Conn., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Diageo, the world's leading premium drinks business and social responsibility advocate, announced today that it will make a $100 donation to the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) for each tackle recorded by a Redskins safety during the 2009 season. The donation, which is part of Diageo and the Washington Redskins' "Responsibility is a Team Sport" program, aims to help promote responsible decision making amongst adult beverage alcohol consumers.
The donation will be earmarked specifically for WRAP's SoberRide initiative, a free taxi cab ride program created in 1993 to keep Washington D.C. area roads safe from impaired drivers during traditionally high-risk, holiday periods. The donation will help ensure that a greater number of taxi cabs will be available to consumers during these periods.
"We're always looking for fun ways to engage adult consumers and football fans about the importance of responsibility, and this gives Redskins fans even more reason to cheer for their defense," said Guy Smith, Executive Vice President, Diageo. "However, the best part about this is that it ultimately raises money for such a worthy program that will help ensure people get home safely after a night out."
Tackles recorded by any of the Redskins safeties - starters and reserves, strong safeties and free safeties - will count towards the donation, which will be made at the end of the regular season. Fans will have the opportunity to monitor the team's progress on Redskins.com throughout the season to keep track of the tackles and donation money earned to date.
"With one-third of Greater Washington's traffic deaths being caused by drunk drivers, it's important to have a game-plan to combat this too often deadly opposition," said Kurt Gregory Erickson, President of WRAP. "Diageo's further investment in this local fight is most welcomed."
The Washington Redskins and Ken Harvey, the organization's Director of Responsibility, support Diageo's efforts to make a donation for each tackle recorded by a Redskins safety this season. As Director of Responsibility, Harvey oversees the team's "Responsibility is a Team Sport" initiative, which with the support of long-time team sponsor Diageo, is dedicated to the development and implementation of responsibility programs that address the team, players, and the community throughout the year.
"This is a great way to keep safety top-of-mind with football fans," said Harvey. "With the support of Diageo and the Redskins, WRAP's SoberRide program will continue to help keep DC's roads safe."
